IMO Demonstration Project in the Republic of Portugal

In October-November 1999, Russian specialists carried out a field program to study and conduct impacts on cloudiness in the autumn period in Portugal in order to assess its suitability for PMI using Russian technology.

To study cloudiness and carry out impacts, an LSU An-30 «Cyclone» equipped with an IVK and means for cloud seeding was used in the work. As a reagent for seeding the clouds, silver iodide was used, introduced into the clouds by shooting PV-26-95 squibs, and liquid nitrogen sprayed into the cloud using an aircraft generator GMCHL-A when the aircraft flew 100-200 m below the cloud top.

In the period from October 16 to November 15, 1999, seven working flights were carried out for research and its experimental sowing. To control the results of impacts, we used precipitation data from 50 stations of the Portuguese meteorological service, which have 30-year continuous series of daily precipitation layers.

As a result of cloud studies and a static assessment of the effect of impacts performed using a modified historical regression method, it was found that for 8 working days (from October 22 to October 29) about 0.37 cubic meters were obtained as a result of cloud seeding. km of additional water, which amounted to 7.4% of the volume of natural precipitation during this period (Table 1).
